There is strong evidence that Sympathy is a Knife with Taylor IS reality
This isn’t a drill. Charli XCX is teasing that Taylor Swift might be on the Sympathy is a Knife remix, Brat’s latest after the number one hit Guess remix with Billie Eilish. From Addison Rae, Robyn, Yung Lean, Lorde to Billie, everyone has worked on the remix with Charli as Brat takes her to new heights, but there’s one voice that everyone thought was out of reach. Well, that reach is suddenly becoming very tangible. Over the bank holiday, Charli XCX dropped several teasers that she’s dropping the Sympathy is a Knife remix and that Taylor Swift will indeed be on it. Here’s everything you need to know.
The context
ICYYMI, Sympathy is a Knife by Brat has been a huge topic of discussion after people interpreted the lyrics as being a Taylor Swift shade. The lyrics in the second verse are about how Charli doesn’t want to see anyone “backstage at my boyfriend’s show, fingers crossed behind my back I hope they break up quick.” It has been interpreted as being about Taylor Swift because Charli is engaged to George Daniel from 1975 and Taylor Swift briefly dated Matty Healy last year.
Charli claims that it’s not an offensive track, but rather a song that addresses her insecurities.
The first clue
In her massive new profile for New York Magazine, which featured Charli XCX shooting with acclaimed photographer David LaChapelle, Charli hinted that a big name artist had reached out to her about a collaboration. “They’re calling random artists. I don’t know who, but people I really respect. It’s like being the new kid in school that people are fascinated by.” Of course, there’s no one bigger than Taylor right now.
The second clue
Taylor Swift literally dropped a Charli XCX quote to New York Magazine, specifically praising Charli. Taylor says, “I’ve been blown away by Charli’s melodic sensibilities since I first heard ‘Stay Away’ in 2011. Her songwriting is surreal and inventive, always. She takes a song to places you wouldn’t expect it to go, and she’s done it consistently for over a decade. I love seeing hard work like that pay off.”
The third clue
The interviewer asked Charli if she ever thought about cutting out the joke about bumping into someone backstage at her boyfriend’s show, because the innuendo was obviously aimed at Swift. Charli’s reaction went viral. She said, “No.” The interviewer says the two then sat in silence. “You play the silent game. But I know, when you stay silent and you want me to talk more. But I don’t care if it’s awkward. We’ll just sit in silence.”
The fourth clue
And probably the biggest one: Charli gave the release an “unfinished” remix of Sympathy is Knife. So, we know it literally exists. The lyrics are mostly aimed at Taylor Swift. “I wrote it three or four weeks ago, about this idea of, like, you gotta fall — if you’re even remotely supposed to be on top, you gotta fall,” she says. “I’m not a f**king idiot. I know how shit works.”
There’s a new verse, which goes like this: “It’s a knife when you’re finally at the top… / They wanna see you fall.”
The fifth clue
In the accompanying profile photoshoot, there is a severed hand with friendship bracelets. Friendship bracelets have become associated with Swifties and the Eras Tour. These have the name Charli XCX on them.
I’m a conspiracy theorist, guys. The Charli XCX and Taylor Swift remix IS COMING.
