Halsey has revealed that their fifth studio album will be titled The great imitator.
On Tuesday, August 27, the pop star, who uses she/they pronouns, shared a decades-spanning trailer, announcing her upcoming “confessional concept album.”
As the teaser airs, Halsey confesses, “I really thought this album was going to be the last one I made.”
The video transitions into a series of clips featuring the “You Should Be Sad” musician, 29, sporting retro outfits and hairstyles as he reflects on who he might have been if he’d had a career in earlier times.
“What if I debuted in the early 2000s? The ’90s? The ’80s? The ’70s?” the “Colors” artist asks in a voiceover. “Am I still Halsey every time? In every timeline, do I still get sick? Do I still become a mom?”
In the video, Halsey cosplays as artists representing different eras, including David Bowie and Britney Spears, the latter of which is featured in their recent single “Lucky.”
The trailer also features clips of previously unreleased songs from the three-time Grammy nominee, capturing the aesthetics of several decades of music.
“If this all ended now, is this someone you’d be proud to leave behind? Is that you?” Halsey concludes.
At the end of the teaser is the caption: “‘The Great Impersonator,’ a confessional concept album from Halsey.”

In June, a day after the release of “The End,” Halsey shared a health update on Instagram, revealing that she was suffering from serious health issues.
“Thank you guys for the incredible amount of love for ‘The End’ and the support you’ve shown me since its release,” she wrote. “I realize everyone is catching up on news that I’ve been holding in for a long time, and I wasn’t sure how much I wanted to share. They added: “In 2022, I was first diagnosed with SLE (lupus) and then a rare T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder. Both are currently in treatment or remission; and both I will likely have for life.”
Last month, Halsey spoke openly about her hesitation to return to the spotlight.
In a Tumblr post, the MaXXXina The star shared her feelings towards fans who expressed negative opinions about her recent return to music and made her “regret coming back.”
“My fans are without a doubt meaner to me than anyone else on the planet. I don’t speak for all of you, of course,” Halsey wrote. “But it used to be a minority that was horrible to me and now it seems like the majority is just there to occasionally voice their opinion about how much they hate me or how horrible I am.”
She added that it’s hard to “want to engage in a space that’s completely devoid of kindness, sympathy, patience; or to be honest, human decency. Especially after years of hiding from interactions for fear that this EXACT thing would happen.”
“I don’t know, man. I almost lost my life,” Halsey said, referring to her diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus and a rare T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder.
